Fire ants are one of the most serious invasive ants in the world due to their harmful effects on people, the environment, and the economy.

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program (the Program) aims to eradicate fire ants from Australia by 2032, focusing on strengthening containment and compliance, and intensifying program-led and community treatment.

The Program reports to the National Management Group that is responsible for the strategic direction, with technical advice and support provided by a national consultative committee.

The work of the Queensland Government’s Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST) complements eradication efforts. FAST focuses on equipping all levels of government, industry, and communities in areas awaiting planned treatment with the skills and knowledge to self-manage fire ants on land they own or manage.

The Program collaborates closely with international scientists and some of the country’s most experienced risk management experts to design and implement eradication activities.

No other country in the world has successfully eradicated an incursion as large as the one in Queensland. Many countries, including the United States and China, have given up.
